Investors who were eventually won over by the merits of backing emerging markets will have been left disappointed by returns over the past year. The promise has long been that poorer parts of the world, such as China and India, will rapidly catch up with the wealth of the West, and that investors here could profit from that transformation, albeit with a bumpy ride along the way.
